There is a growing issue with myopia across developed nations, starkly illustrated by a single statistic – 96% of 19 year-old males in South Korea are myopic! Richard Smith joined the group this morning to discuss why this is happening, with extended screen-time being the likely primary culprit.
One of the obvious solutions to this is to reduce your screen time, but for many that is not easily achieved given the use of mobile phones for so much these days. So what else can be done? Another tactic that can be employed is to use the rule of 20s, when you take a break every 20 minutes to look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. That should help to alleviate digital eye strain.
Reducing eye strain serves not just to protect against myopia, but also reduces that likelihood that you will develop glaucoma.
Richard also talked about the use of AI to examine digital retinal scans, which can identify many potential health issues including high blood sugar levels, leading to diabetes.
