In today’s WBG presentation, Alison Gordon of The Computer People gave the group a potted history of her career. She initially had desires to be a car mechanic, but was persuaded that a warm and clean working environment might be a better fit. So she turned to BT, working on mainframe computers, initially carrying out tasks such as updating the directory enquiries database and scrabbling under raised floors to run cables around a building.
A subsequent job saw Alison work on the futures market, back when trades were carried out on the floor using open outcry. It was at this time that email entered widespread use, and Alison encountered the first email virus, the “Love Bug“. Around this time Alison also became a mother, and moved out of Dartford to East Kent to get away from an insalubrious neighbourhood.
A series of jobs ending in redundancies prompted Alison to start working for herself, where she became “The Computer Girl”. In time the business grew, and recently the mix of business staff prompted a change to “The Computer People”, which offers a repair service form their shop in New Romney, and is a Microsoft Partner offering licences and support to local businesses. Alison prides herself on providing a service that listens to her customers needs, and communicates proactively. They are ready to help you with any hardware or software requirements.
