Long-term WBG member, Graham Card, has been gainfully self-employed offering international business finance services for 30+ years since his last ‘proper’ job. Along the way he has made some mistakes, but is always looking to learn from them. He offered some of these lessons to the group, including….
- you never look out of place in a suit
- always leave on good terms, you may need to go back
- use a refundable commitment fee arrangement to ensure people don’t abuse your expertise
- look to help first, the business will follow
- don’t offer too many choices
- networking works, sooner or later
- spread your expertise by, for example, delivering training
- diversify
