Bob Morgan, Chairman of Wealden Business Group (WBG), is pleased to announce that Uprising are WBG’s nominated charity for this fiscal year.
Uprising Youth and Community is a growing charity based in Ashford, Kent that aims to support young people, families, and communities facing significant challenges, achieve improvements in life, resulting in personal and community transformation.
Andy Richardson recently visited WBG to outline the three main projects where he spends most of his time and effort: Aspire, Metanoia, and Hang10.
Aspire helps teenagers who are unwilling or unable to access conventional educational pathways, often rejected by their school or with impossible home backgrounds. They are helped to achieve acceptable levels of education in English and mathematics. While this in the eyes of many people is the optimum solution the charity does not insist that this is the only outcome. A training in practical skills and interpersonal communication is seen as equally if not more important.
Metanoia – we are all aware of the rising numbers of deaths and injuries associated with knife crime. Knife crime and the county lines drug problem are closely connected. The Metanoia project aims to show young people that bad choices can end in prison or early death. Carrying a knife is seen as a method of protection for many teenagers and they don’t realise how bad the consequences can be. The charity spells out what can go wrong, often with the help of ex-gang members from criminal communities.
Hang10 – the volunteers from the charity go out at night (after 10pm – hence the name!) in and around Ashford to hang out with groups of young people with the aim of getting to know them and helping them to navigate life.

Like many charities, Uprising has had to dig deeply into their reserves over the last 18+ months to support their young people. Because of this, WBG will be supporting them over the financial year by raising much-needed funds through member donations and fundraising activities.
