At this week’s Wealden Business Group breakfast meeting, one of our members delivered a fascinating presentation charting the history of Lloyd’s of London. The talk traced the market’s evolution from its 1688 origins in a London coffee house into the world’s leading specialty insurance market. Highlighting its unique “subscription market” structure, the overview detailed how Lloyd’s expanded globally and survived massive historical catastrophes, ranging from the 1906 San Francisco earthquake to 9/11 and modern cyber insurance demands. The group perceived the presentation quite well, finding it highly detailed and engaging, despite noting a small amount of repetition across some of the slides.
The real twist, however, came immediately after the presentation concluded. The speaker revealed that the entire slide deck and historical overview had been completely AI-generated. This surprise was used to demonstrate a critical point to our networking group: Artificial Intelligence is no longer a concept for the future, but an incredibly capable tool that is here right now. The presentation served as a powerful reminder that modern small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) must actively learn to embrace these tools to stay efficient and competitive.
A lively group discussion ensued, with members debating how local businesses can best harness AI within their own operations. While the minor repetition in the slides showed that AI generation still benefits from a human touch, its ability to compile centuries of complex history into an engaging format in seconds left a strong impression. Ultimately, the session provided an excellent reminder that staying open to technological shifts is vital for any forward-thinking business looking to streamline operations and uncover new opportunities.
