Victoria Carmichael – Tackling Loneliness

26/08/2026 By wealden

Weds 26th August 2026

This morning, members were delighted to welcome back Victoria Carmichael, Communications and Engagement Lead for local charity CARM. Having previously been chosen as the Wealden Business Group’s Charity of the Year, CARM has spent three decades serving the community, with Victoria at the helm since 2019. The charity operates across Tenterden and Romney Marsh, providing vital friendship and support to combat both social isolation and loneliness—two distinct challenges that affect many residents across our rural villages.

Victoria outlined the impressive scope of CARM’s core initiatives, which include dedicated befriending services supporting 60 individual clients and reminiscence therapy sessions using music, pictures, and discussion delivered across 23 care settings. Additionally, CARM hosts regular ‘Meeting Points’ in 10 local villages, providing welcoming social hubs featuring guest speakers, activities, and friendly visitors. Thanks to newly secured National Lottery funding, the charity is expanding its reach with targeted initiatives such as Caring Hands hand massage therapy, Communi-Teas volunteer gatherings, and organized Social Drives for small group outings. Their active interest groups—ranging from I’m Game indoor carpet curling and Paws for Joy therapy dogs to Friendship Blooms flower allotments and Knit Wits—ensure there is something to engage everyone.

To keep these essential services running, CARM is asking the local business community for support. You can help by spreading the word to those who might benefit or want to volunteer, or by sponsoring individual village Meeting Points to keep these vital lifelines open. To learn more or get involved, visit the CARM website.
