Gary Stevenson was a largely typical east-end lad who used to stare at the lights atop Canary Wharf and wonder at what lied there. His atypical brilliance at maths, though, provided a route to him working in foreign exchange trading in the docklands, via the Trading Game mentioned in the book title. This game was, in fact, a means of identifying those from under-represented backgrounds who might have the nous to make it as a foreign exchange trader.
Gary most certainly did have the nous, rising to become, in his words, Citibank’s most profitable trader one year. In this very readable a book that rattles along at pace, his entry into the world of trading, and his relatively rapid rise to the top, followed by an even more rapid descent, is very thought-provoking. It sparked quite a discussion at the WBG breakfast meeting.
