Heather Carpenter is a member of WBG and mainly promotes her glass fusing business, Mara Amore. However, Heather is also a qualified exam arrangements assessor, which she gained in here previous line of work, that of a SENCO in a secondary school. She has a separate business, Kind Mind Assessments, that allows her to provide assessments on a consultancy basis.
Heather explained that there is a wide range in how children in schools and people in general process information. Some are great at reading and comprehending quickly, others need more time to process the information. Some can remember things readily, others need more time to absorb the information into their memory centres. People with ADHD can struggle to concentrate on a single task for long periods.
None of these make a person any more or less intelligent than others, of course. But particularly in a school environment, someone with processing needs can be disadvantaged in an exam situation if they do not, for instance, have extra time to complete a test. Equally, in a work environment, someone with ADHD might not be best suited to repetitive tasks, or may need regular breaks to reset and refocus.
Having given the group the ‘science’ bit, Heather then proceeded to carry out a couple of the tests on those attending. Whilst not an ideal testing environment (usually they would be carried out one-to-one) it very much served to demonstrate to the group how the assessments work. We look forward to getting our results next week!
