The new Labour government was elected partly on the promise to improve protection of workers in the UK, and the proposed changes to employment legislation bring to light how that will look in practice. Amir Takk of Hunter Law elaborated on the detail of the new laws which will be under consultation next year and are likely to take effect in 2026.
Changes to legislation include:
- Offering unfair dismissal right from day 1 (it’s after 2 years at the moment), replacing them with a statutory probation period (variable in duration, but typically 9 months)
- Protecting employees from 3rd party harassment
- Making work more flexible and family-friendly
- Improving the protection for those on zero-hours contracts
- Ending fire and rehire
There are other, more minor changes, in the pipeline too. Amir’s presentation is available below for more detail on all matters.
