Weds 22nd May 2024
Joining the group this week was Dave Naylor, a Soft Water Demonstrator from Harvey Water Softeners. Dave joined Harvey from British Gas a number of years ago, mainly because he liked the quality products and the ethical philosophy of the company. This philosophy is illustrated by the fact their latest domestic unit utilises a high proportion of recycled plastic in its construction.
Dave explained to the group that all water is soft as it falls from the sky to the earth, and it is the materials it subsequently passes through that can make it hard. In the South-East of England, where the majority of drinking water is sourced from aquifers, this includes chalk and clay which add calcium and magnesium. Harvey Water Softeners pass hard water over a resin to remove the hardness, using an ion exchange process.
Dave also explained how soft water is absolutely safe to drink, debunking the myth to the contrary, and can have many benefits to households:
- Keeps pipes, kettles and other appliances scale-free
- Reduces detergent need
- No water marks on surfaces
- Great for dermatological conditions
- Extends appliance longevity
